Files are made from high-quality chromium alloy steel with a cutting surface hardened to 65Rc. They have a unique ductile core which reduces file breakage and a lacquer coating to prevent rust. Files come in a variety of shapes and patterns to meet every need. All files, except needle files, are measured exclusive of the tang (from the base of the tang to the tip).
The Mill Bastard Cut file is for sharpening mill saws, circular saws, axes, hoes, spades and knives. This is a good all-purpose file, used for finishing metal. It has single-cut sides and edges and a tapered shape.
For safety reasons and to prevent possible OSHA violations, a tanged file should never be used without a tight-fitting handle. A handle will not only help prevent accidents, it helps make the job easier and more enjoyable.
