To obtain a sound weld, the joint must be meticulously cleaned. The joint should be thoroughly degreased with MEK, toluene, acetone or another chlorine-free solvent. Apply the solvent with a lint-free cloth. Once degreased, do not touch the joint or any area. If a layer of oxide exists at or near the joint, acid pickling this area is advised. Welding should be performed inside of an argon-filled container so as to protect the weld and the heat-affected zone from the effects of oxygen and nitrogen. For critical applications, welding should be performed in a gas tight chamber thoroughly purged of air and filled with a high purity inert gas. With proper tooling, the titanium joint can be adequately shielded for welding without using a chamber. Both the weld deposit and the heat affected zone must be shielded during welding and until the temperature in the heat-affected zone is below approximately 800°F/427ËšC. If shielding is inadequate, the weld will be brittle. No preheating is required. Use X-Ergon’s Rare Earth or 2% Thoriated Tungsten.
